The 2016 Bronzeville Autumn series began with Art House Trap at Jazale’s Art Studio, featuring an evolving interactive art installation created by Mikal Floyd-Pruitt, Vedale Hill, Manny Vibe$, Kevin Boatright, and other artists. The installation was comprised of physical and performative elements that explore our connections to the cultural phenomenon of hip-hop. Artist Evelyn Patricia Terry offered her Raw Food for Radiant Health workshop which included free green juice and raw food snacks. Live music was offered by local artists including Kellen Klassic Abston, J.J. Jabber, Terry Harris, Olen Franklin, DJ LoLo MKE, and Prestige Music. Local vendors shared their handmade arts and crafts including Della Wells, I Am Milwaukee, Outspoken Designs and Papyrus and Charms. The installation was publicly accessible for four Saturday open houses in November or by appointment until mid-December 2016.
During Art House Trap, we also hosted two additional public programs focused on art, design and community health. The first on November 7 was a workshop entitled Collaboration as a Tool for Change with MKE<->LAX artists in residence Tracee Johnson and Katie Loughmiller of Green Box Lab. The second on December 14 was a community input group focused on “Demonstrating Diversity is Profitable” for the Designing a More Equitable Milwaukee led by the Zeidler Center for Public Discussion in collaboration with MKE<->LAX and Greater Together. We also held a critique of art house trap with local art critics Shelleen Greene and Jill Sebastian on February 19, 2017.
On January 28, 2017, Jazale’s Art Studio hosted the Day2Day youth art exhibition with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. On February 15, Jazale’s Art Studio held a fundraiser called ART X MUSIC X BRONZEVILLE, which included Bobby Drake’s Never Say Die performance, an art exhibition with work by Vedale Hill and Mikal Floyd-Pruitt, and music by DJ Turtle Sooup.
On April 4, 2017 CUPED hosted the Historic Garfield School Cultural Campus Groundbreaking. Below are a few key articles about the catalytic event:
